Interesting Fact: The Queensland Mines Inspectorate released a bulletin in 2016 relating to Fixed plant and mobile equipment fires on surface coal mines. It states the common causes for fires on fixed plant included delayed maintenance, e.g. a defective conveyor idler bearing was found but it was decided to continue operations and replace the idler on the planned maintenance day.

It also states that approximately 20% of reported dozer fires and 15% of truck fires occurred post a maintenance activity.

The Government of Western Australia Department of Mines, Industry Regulation and Resources Safety released a Fixed Plant audit guide in 2016. This guide helps identify key things to look for when inspecting fixed plant. Mining operations are encouraged to use these self-assessment templates; @Mining self-assessments | Department of Energy, Mines, Industry Regulation and Safety (commerce.wa.gov.au)" to review their practices and the arrangements in place to manage hazards in the workplace, secure the health and safety of workers and identify areas for improvement. These templates were built under the Mines Safety and Inspection Act 1994 and regulations and users will need to align their content against the relevant sections of the Work Health and Safety Act 2020 and Work Health and Safety Regulations 2022
