Interesting Fact: When dealing with large open pit mines with nearly horizontal, bedded coal seams, geologists often plan pit development using a column model instead of a traditional block model. Why? To avoid coal-rock mixing in blocks. This innovative approach ensures that the coal seams remain distinct and facilitates efficient mining operations. The column model allows for better visualization and management of coal layers, leading to more effective pit planning.
